Thelma L. Bray, a remarkable woman whose legacy will forever shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, passed away peacefully at home on January 23, 2026, in Silver Lake, Kansas. Born on April 23, 1925, in Lebo, Kansas as Thelma Lucille Dunfield, her journey was one of passion, service and unwavering determination.
Her esteemed career began in an era when few women held professional roles in the sciences. Thelma was proud to be the first female meteorologist in the state of Kansas, a trailblazer who paved the way for future generations of women in meteorology. After her marriage to Keith Bray on August 31, 1947, she dedicated herself to raising her children, embodying the essence of a nurturing mother while also pursuing her interests with vigor. Thelma later found fulfillment in her work as a postmaster for the US Postal Service, a role she embraced until her retirement. Beyond these accomplishments, she spent four decades as a census taker, always making an impact in her community.
Education was important to Thelma, having attended Roosevelt High School in Emporia, Kansas and Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. During her time in college, she worked full-time and still took a full course load, including participating in the Friends University Singing Quakers. Her passion for singing endured throughout her life, evident in her participation in the Silver Lake Community Choir.
Thelma's personality was as vibrant as her many contributions. She was a force of nature, opinionated, independent and a natural-born leader. Known for being a fighter who stood up for her beliefs, she was service-oriented, giving generously of her time and energy. A true prayer warrior, she encouraged all who crossed her path with her wit and humor. Her love for children and the joys of being around people enriched her life and the lives of countless others. Her commitment to service extended beyond her immediate family, as Thelma volunteered extensively with the United Methodist Women, Kiwanis, Forest Park Conference Center, various charities and the State Republican Committee for many years. Her gift of administration allowed her to organize and lead many community efforts. Additionally, she was adventurous, having solo piloted a Cessna before marriage and traveled to all 50 states with Keith, living life to the fullest.
Thelma's journey through life was not without its heartbreaks. She mourned the loss of her beloved husband, Keith, who preceded her in death on March 15, 2013, and her son, Greg, who passed away on June 5, 1979. They remain cherished in memories, alongside her parents, J.W. and Irma Dunfield and all her siblings.
Thelma is survived by her devoted sons, Steve (Karyn), Mike (Colleen), and Jeff (Joyce); her daughter, Karen Leann Donais; and her daughter, Susan (Josh) Pattie. She is also lovingly remembered by 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward her spirit of generosity and her zest for life. As we remember Thelma L. Bray, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, humor and relentless love. Her strength and kindness touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the fabric of her community. Though her physical presence will be missed, her legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those she has inspired and uplifted throughout her extraordinary life.
