Sachiko Haya

Sachiko (Takamiya) Haya of Topeka passed away peacefully at Homestead Assisted Living on October 16, 2025 at the age of 91. Sachiko was graceful, humorous, and avid reader of Mysteries, National Geographic magazine, and her Rafu Shimpo Japanese Weekly newspapers from Los Angeles. She really enjoyed the bi-monthly parties @ Homestead, laughing and dancing with others. She also liked watching baseball and golf on TV.

Sachiko was born in Tokyo, Japan August 30, 1934. She often remarked how much she loved living in America and proudly became an American citizen January 25, 1980 in Los Angeles.

She met her husband, Austin, in Tokyo while he was stationed there with the U.S. Air Force. They were married December 5, 1969 at the American Embassy in Tokyo. After they were transferred to Highland, California she enjoyed bowling on a league and often driving to “Little Tokyo” in L.A. to get her Japanese foods to cook. She liked watching the professional golf tournaments on TV and knew all about the pros playing the game.

Sachiko was preceded in death by husband of 50 years, Austin Haya, Sr., her parents, Komao and Chiyo Takamiya and sisters, Chieko Noguchi, Reiko Shimano, and brother Hiroshi Takamiya.

Sachiko is survived by children, Jayne (Keith) Lewis of Tecumseh; Steve (Shelly) Haya of Maple Hill, Sharon (Daniel) Escobar of Topeka, Austin T. Haya, Jr. of Topeka and 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 am-11:00 am on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at Parker-Price and Davidson Cremations and Funerals, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka Kansas 66608. Funeral services will be begin at 11:00 am following the family visitation. Interment will take place at Topeka Cemetery.
