Rick Colton

January 20, 1942 — June 12, 2025

Topeka, Kansas

Rick Colton, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on June 12, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 83. Born on January 20, 1942, in Grovespring, Missouri, Rick was the beloved son of Loraine and Alma Ruth (Rountree) Colton, who preceded him, along with his sisters, Barbara Admire, Dorthea Ferguson, and Louise Anderson.

After graduating from Lebanon High School in 1960, Rick proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served from 1960 until his honorable discharge in 1968. He continued his commitment to service in the Air Force Reserve and later the Army Reserve until 1985. After his active duty military career, he worked as a security guard at the "new" Chief's stadium in Kansas City in 1963 and then served as the Director of Safety and Security at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka for 11 years. Later he enjoyed driving as an over-the-road truck driver for 14 years, traveling far and wide.

Rick's life was enriched by his profound love for his family. He married Mary (Wilson) Colton on November 30, 1963, in Kansas City, Kansas. Together, they created a nurturing home filled with laughter and love. Rick adored his child, Sharon (Vance) McIntosh and the time he spent with his grandchildren, Mikayla (Zach) Balderas and Jordan McIntosh. He was also a proud new great-grandfather to Braxton Balderas. Rick treasured his family and the bonds they shared, repeatedly expressing that family meant the world to him.

In addition to his dedication to family, Rick was known for his warm-hearted, ornery personality. He loved to tease those around him, bringing joy to their lives. His patriotism was evident throughout his life, as was his protective nature toward those he cared about. As a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and the Sunrise Optimist Club, Rick evidenced his faith and commitment to his community.

Rick had a variety of interests that he passionately pursued during his lifetime. He enjoyed gardening, RV camping, and traveling. He and Mary enjoyed nine unforgettable cruise journeys together. They spent 21 years escaping Kansas winters to either Arizona or South Texas in their 5th wheel trailer. Additionally, he was a fan of old Western TV shows and relished vacations with his original Air Force buddies, creating lasting memories.

A Celebration of Life will follow on July 4, 2025, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Topeka, Kansas, at 10:00 AM. Private burial will take place at Half-Day Cemetery.
