Richard Keith Laird, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on December 16, 2025, at Stormont Vail Hospital at the age of 83. Born on August 26, 1942, in Rock Island, Illinois, Richard was a man whose life was defined by faith, kindness, intelligence, and a touch of ornery fun with a great head of hair.
Educated at Denver Lutheran in Denver, Colorado, he continued his journey of learning at Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska, where he met his wife of 61 years, Linda. They were united in marriage on July 19, 1964, in Sylvan Grove, Kansas, and their bond was a beautiful testament to love that flourished throughout the decades.
Richard's career was as multifaceted as his personality. He began his professional life teaching physical education for the school district 501 in the late 1960s and made a significant impact as a swim coach for Topeka High School and the Topeka Swim Club. However, for the last 40 years of his life, he found joy in the world of commercial real estate, where he continued to work right until his final days.
A devoted family man, Richard cherished his role as a father to his four children: Matt (Tracy) Laird, Aaron Laird, Shannon (Chris) Klaus, and Lindsey (Tommy) Guffey. He took immense pride in his beautiful family, celebrating their accomplishments while his heart swelled with joy as he watched his grandchildren—Eli, Ava, Brogan, Avery, Sloan, Maggie, Baron, Presley, and Cash—succeed in their musical and athletic pursuits. His home was filled with laughter and love, and he was never happier than when surrounded by those he held dear.
Richard's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was a big supporter of the K-State Wildcats and the Kansas City Chiefs, finding joy in both their victories and defeats. He loved to indulge in the nostalgia of watching old country western movies and could often be found in his garage listening to classic rock as the radio in the garage was always tuned to V100 or 101.5 KRock.
In addition to his vibrant personality, Richard was deeply committed to his faith, actively participating in his church, Faith Lutheran in Topeka. His commitment to his community and loved ones reflected his understanding of life’s true treasures.
He is now reunited with his parents, Paul Laird and Frances Durocher, his brother Robert Laird, and his precious granddaughter Maddie Laird, alongside his brother-in-law, Alan Ostermann. Their memories will forever live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Richard Keith Laird’s legacy is one of strength, love, and a life well-lived. He will be profoundly missed by his wife Linda, their children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege to know him. Though he has departed from this world, the warmth of his spirit will continue to illuminate the lives of those he touched.
A Memorial Service in his memory will take place at 10:30am Saturday, December 27, 2025 at Faith Lutheran Church, 1716 SW Gage Blvd Topeka, Kansas 66604.
