Richard Dean Johnson, 76, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

He was born March 4, 1949, in Pittsburg, Kansas, the son of Melvin A. and Ruth A. (Carlyon) Johnson. He attended Elementary, Junior High School, and graduated High School in 1967 all in Pittsburg, Kansas. He served in United States Army Reserve until being honorably discharged in 1973.

Richard was employed by Woolworth, TG&Y, Prudential Life Insurance, and Kansas Turnpike Authority in Topeka until retiring in March of 2012.

He was a member of Rolling Hills Christian Church in Topeka, where he assisted with the lawn care of the church.

Richard married Betty R. Johnson on June 5, 1971 in Wichita, Kansas. She survives in Topeka. Other survivors include his daughter, Melissa (Bryan) Boutz; three grandchildren, Isaiah, JoyAnne, and Gabriel; and his sister, D.J. Johnson of Costa Rica; and his brother, Edward Johnson of Medford, OR; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Robert Johnson.

Richard loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed reading the Bible, hunting, walking, feeding birds and squirrels, and was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas State fan.

Honoring his request, cremation is planned. A celebration of life ceremony will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Rolling Hills Christian Church, 4530 NW Hiawatha Pl, Topeka, KS 66618. Parker Price Cremations, Funerals & Receptions is assisting the family. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Branson Cemetery, Sedgwick County, Kansas.

In the spirit of Richard’s generosity, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of Rolling Hills Christian Church, 4530 NW Hiawatha Pl, Topeka, KS 66618.
