Randall E. Starkey

Randall E. Starkey, born on August 25, 1946, in Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and a cherished friend to many. Randy's journey through life was one marked by service, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family.

After graduating from Topeka High School in 1964, Randy’s dedication to service extended beyond his career. He served six years in the United States Army, including nine months in Vietnam, where he earned several medals for his bravery and service, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Expert Badge with Rifle Bar, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and One Overseas Bar. This chapter of his life spoke to his courage and the profound love he held for his country. He was also a member of the VFW Post 1650.

Randy embarked on a career in the railroad industry. Starting as a lineman, he honed his skills and ultimately progressed to a draftsman position, before becoming a materials manager, a role he held proudly until his retirement in 1995. His strong work ethic reflected his character—always the first to offer help but the last to ask for it, embodying a spirit of commitment and generosity that defined him.

Randy was known for his warm sense of humor and stubborn spirit, qualities that endeared him to everyone who knew him. With a passion for woodworking, he built almost everything made of wood in his home, each piece bearing witness to his creativity and skills. He was an avid hunter/guide, relishing the tranquility of nature. His love for attending auctions and collecting hens on a nest candy dishes brought him joy and fun-filled stories to share with family and friends. Randy enjoyed making other woodworking projects for his family and friends.

Above all, Randy took immense pride in his family. His wife of 58 years, Gayla Starkey, shared a bond with him that was deep and enduring. Together, they raised three children: Laura (Richard) Heflin, Randall (Alison) Starkey II, and Shane (Tamara) Starkey, who were truly his pride and joy. His legacy continued through his grandchildren—Levi (Morgan) Starkey, Mickayla (London) Starkey-Kean, Jesse Heflin, Gage Starkey, Christie Wingert-Palmer, Jennifer Branlund, Bree Thompson, Chase Thompson, and Anthony Heflin—as well as his ten great-grandchildren. Each moment spent with them brought him happiness and a sense of fulfillment that was palpable.

Randy is survived by his loving siblings: Beverly (Fred) Meeks, Peggy (Charles) Kuhn, Brenda (Gordan) Hainey, Donna (Duane) Needham, and Karla Williams. He joins his beloved parents, Anna Adams and Ira Starkey, in eternal rest.

Randy’s life was a testament to hard work, love, and resilience. His unwavering support for his family and friends, coupled with his selflessness and humor, will forever echo in the hearts of those he touched. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, creativity, and devotion that will be cherished for generations to come.

A Funeral Service will take place July 19, 2025 at 11:00am at Parker Price and Davidson Funeral Home, with a visitation the hour prior. Graveside Services will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery. Following the graveside service, a luncheon will take place at California Acres Church of Christ 2200 SE 21st St, Topeka, Kansas 66607.
