Michael L. Huerter, 75, passed away on June 20, 2026, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer.

Mike was born on April 24, 1951, in Topeka, Kansas, to Leonard George and Dorothy Jean Huerter. He was the middle child and is survived by his two sisters, Linda Wickstrum and Patty Ramsey. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1969 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Fort Hays State University.

Mike proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He went on to enjoy a 30-year career with AT&T in the Engineering and Planning Department, retiring in 2007.

During his career, Mike volunteered with Meals on Wheels and coached youth basketball and baseball. He was an avid runner who participated in multiple marathons and triathlons. He also enjoyed kayaking and paddled the 350-mile stretch of the Missouri River from Kansas City to St. Louis several times.

In retirement, Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his nine grandchildren, and attending concerts with his wife. He also valued his Tuesday evening gatherings as well as the many fishing expeditions with his close friends.

Mike is survived by his wife, Sheryl Huerter; his three sons; Dusty & Kim, Cole & Ashley, and Clay & Courtney as well as his nine grandchildren; his sisters, Linda Wickstrum (Ken) and Patty Ramsey (Harold); his niece, Sarah; and his nephews, Cliff and Jason.

Mike was diagnosed with esophageal cancer on December 21, 2022, and underwent extensive chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and one major surgery from 2022 through 2025. He faced his illness with strength, determination, and resilience, continuing treatment until the end when medically necessary.

Mike’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who offered prayers, friendship, and support throughout his illness.
