Michael J. Degand, III

Michael J. Degand III, 61, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2026.

He was born October 13, 1965, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Michael J. Jr and Gracie (Busey) Degand. He attended Topeka High School. Shortly after turning 18, Michael joined the United States Army. He served during the time that the Berlin Wall in Germany was taken down.

Michael dedicated over twenty years to the Kansas Department of Transportation as a Senior Engineering Technician.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 400 in Topeka. He was also a part of the Citizens Band Potawatomi.

Michael grew up in North Topeka and shared a strong heritage of the community. He loved music of all genres. He had a passion for playing drums and started at a young age continuing until his adulthood. Michael also enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing and camping. His dog, Naala, truly carried the title of a man’s best friend.

He is survived by his sister, Michelle Degand-Lopez; three children; one son in-law; one grandchild on the way; two nieces and two nephews.

A graveside service with military honors is pending. Please check back for service details. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church; 227 SW Van Buren Street, Topeka, KS 66603.
