With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Mary Kortan, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who left us unexpectedly on August 29, 2025.
She was born on December 12, 1941 to Archie & Mary Dickson in Newton, Kansas and graduated from Newton High School in 1959. Mary worked as a bookkeeper, then later in life became a self-employed housecleaner.
Mary was the heart of our family — a woman whose love, strength, and quiet wisdom touched the lives of everyone around her. Her home was always warm and welcoming.
Mary had a lifelong love of learning and a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys. She spent countless peaceful hours working on puzzles, always enjoying the challenge and calm they brought. She found solace in the pages of a good book, and her talent for quilting left behind beautiful keepsakes that her family will cherish forever — each stitch a testament to her patience and love. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Shawnta Martin.
Survivors include her sisters Thelma Harder, Abilene; Lily Esau (Kenny), McGregor, TX; brothers Richard Dickson(Brenda), Newton, Bill Dickson(Vicki), Madison; a daughter, Tami Martin(Jeff Huckabay), Topeka; son, Michael Kortan(Anita), Platte City; grandchildren Ashley Overbey(Greg), Topeka, Ethan Martin(Courtney), Topeka, Mikayla Dendurent (Jeff), Kansas City, Danielle Shineman(Danny), Kansas City. Along with multiple nieces, nephews and ten great grandchildren.
She will be missed deeply and remembered always.
