Marthetta "Marty" Edwards, a cherished figure embedded in the fabric of her community, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 101. Born on October 21, 1924, in Bird City, Kansas, Marty led a life enriched by her passion for music and a profound commitment to nurturing the future generations.

Marty's career was marked by her dedication to education, specifically in the arts. She spent her entire teaching career with the Topeka Public Schools, imparting the joys of music to her students. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom; she was a mentor who inspired countless young minds to find their rhythm and express themselves through music.

Her academic achievements painted a picture of her determination and commitment to personal growth. Marty graduated from Sherman County High School in Goodland in 1942, later earning her Bachelor’s degree from Washburn University in Topeka in 1968 and her Master’s degree from the same esteemed institution in 1975. These milestones only reflected her strong-willed personality—a hallmark of her character. She was known for her ability to take care of business, her adventurous spirit that led her on many spontaneous road trips, and her unwavering kindness that touched everyone she met.

Marty's home was always alive with music, laughter, and the warm aroma of her culinary creations, which she perfected as a self-taught cook. Her love for cooking culminated in "Marty’s Family Cookbook," a cherished compilation of recipes that showcased her culinary prowess. Additionally, she hosted heartwarming sing-alongs at Brewster Place, where her love for music continued to blossom and bring joy to others. Marty also directed the choir in several area churches. She took great pride in directing the Topeka Civic Symphony.

The pride she took in her family and the successes of her children was immeasurable. Marty’s legacy lives on through her sons: Tim (Carolyn) Edwards, Sid (Debbie) Edwards, Bill (Nancy) Edwards, George (Mary) Edwards, and Gene (Mary Nimz) Edwards; her sister, Mary Ann Kersenbrock; as well as her ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Each member of her family was a cornerstone of her life, and she consistently emphasized their importance in her journey.

Marthetta is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tim O. Edwards after their marriage of 72 years; her mother, Edna L. Bristow-Minor; her father, S. Harold Minor; and her twin brother, Milton Minor. Their memory will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who loved her.

A visitation will be held in her honor on February 12, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church in Topeka, beginning at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Marty will be laid to rest following the service at a private family graveside.
