Lester “Les” Haslett, age 92, of Topeka, passed away Monday, April 24, 2017 at Stormont Vail in Topeka. Les was born July 26, 1924 in Topeka the son of Raymond and Helen Smith Haslett. Les graduated from Topeka High where he played Tennis and later graduated from Washburn University with a Business Degree. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he was stationed in the South Pacific. Les was a member of the American Legion Post #1. He married Virginia Blevins September 15, 1950 in Topeka. Les worked as a salesman and lumber manager for Whelan’s Lumber in Topeka for over 37 years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dalton Haslett and a sister, Dorothy Farrell. He is survived by his wife, Virginia of over 66 years; two sons, David (Dixie) Haslett of Tecumseh and Steve (Deana) Haslett of Topeka; a daughter, Pam (Dennis) Smith of Americus, KS; six grandchildren, Brian (Rhonda) Haslett, Lisa (Kevin) Eaton, Alicia (Nate) Carter, Kristen Haslett, Karla (Tod) Matthias and Jason (Kandi) Smith and 13 great grandchildren. Les enjoyed golf, especially at Lake Shawnee Golf Course, his wood working projects and assisting family with projects, but he especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Les never knew a stranger and was always ready for a good laugh.
Funeral services will be Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Hope Mausoleum in Topeka. Visitation will be one hour before the services from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Thursday. He will lie in state Wednesday from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lake Shawnee Golf Course in Memory of Les Haslett and sent in care of the Davidson Funeral Home.
