Larry E. Belangy, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on February 9, 2026, at the age of 86 in Topeka, Kansas. Born on May 11, 1939, in Fort Scott, Kansas, Larry lived a rich and fulfilling life, marked by dedication to both his profession and his family.
He received his education from Kincaid High School, graduating in May 1957. Shortly thereafter, Larry embarked on a successful career as a Body Fender Repairman, a calling he pursued for 28 years. His career took him to Bill Young Chevrolet in Chanute, Kansas, where he worked for 3.5 years, and then to Topeka Body Works, where he devoted 24.5 years of service. Following this, Larry spent 15 years with the State of Kansas, where he ultimately retired from the Department of Revenue.
Larry served in the Kansas Army National Guard.
He was deeply passionate about cars, often spending his spare time working on old vehicles in his shop and enjoying the camaraderie of cruise nights and car shows. A longtime member of the Topeka Classic Chevy Club and a proud Co‑Founder of the Tri‑5 Cruisers in Topeka, he poured his heart into the community he helped build. His love for automobiles went hand in hand with his kindness; he became affectionately known as “Papa Larry,” welcoming every child he met into his heart as if they were his own.
In his personal life, Larry found immense joy in his marriage to Mary (Heaton) Belangy, who survives of the home. The couple tied the knot on June 28, 1959, at B.M. Methodist Church, creating a bond that would last through the decades. Together, they nurtured a vibrant family life that included many cherished moments with extended family. He also leaves behind a host extended family, including nieces and nephews.
Larry is preceded in death by his mother, Izene (Smethers) Belangy; father, Frank Belangy; son, James Eldon; brother, Clark Belangy; and an infant brother. The absence of these loved ones is felt deeply among those who remain.
The family will greet friends during a visitation from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, 2026 at Parker-Price & Davidson, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka, KS 66608.
The family invites friends and loved ones to gather at 1:00 PM for a funeral service on Monday, February 16, 2026. In a celebration of his life and interests, they encourage attendees to drive their classic cars to the service.
