Kurt W. Sowards

Kurt William Sowards, 63, died Thursday, June 26, 2025 at his daughter’s home in Derby, Kansas from a prolonged battle with COPD.

He was born on January 13, 1962 in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Morris and Barbara Broadbent Sowards. Kurt was raised in Topeka and graduated from Topeka Seaman High School.

He married Debra Darlene Walty on April 21, 1984 in Topeka. They later moved to Augusta, Kansas where Debbie died at their home on November 27, 2012.

Through the years Kurt enjoyed photography, drawing and painting. He especially enjoyed building model cars and collecting coins.

Survivors include his children Kayla Osborn and husband Scott of Derby, Kristopher Sowards and wife Andi of Kechi, Danyell Ashbaugh and husband Will of Hillsboro, Ks; siblings Karla Savoie and husband Chris, Kim Patton and husband Fred, Keith Sowards and wife Linda, Kevin Sowards and wife Kim all of Topeka; and his grandchildren Bradi Osborn, Adyson Sowards, Alya Sowards, Kyler Sowards, Dax Ashbaugh, and Haley Ashbaugh.

Kurt is preceded in death by his parents Morris and Bobbie Sowards and grandsons Landen Wall and Ethan Osborn.

Private family services will be held in Topeka at a later date.
