Joyce A. Rukes

September 24, 1941 — May 15, 2025

Topeka, Kansas

Joyce A. Rukes, born on September 24, 1941, in Topeka, Kansas, transitioned from this world on May 15, 2025, in the same beautiful city that witnessed her incredible journey through life. She was a cherished daughter, beloved wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother, and loving great-grandmother.

Joyce's early education took place at Seaman High School, where the foundation of her determined spirit began to take shape. From the moment she embarked on her career as a Data Analyst for BNSF Railroad in the 1960s, she exemplified a narrative of hard work and tenacity. After decades of dedication, she retired in 2001, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and professionalism that will long be remembered by her colleagues.

Beyond the realms of her professional life, Joyce was known for her outgoing personality and her unwavering determination. When her mind was set on something, there was no stopping her. She embraced life with open arms, displaying a zest for each moment that inspired those lucky enough to know her. Joyce had a remarkable gift for connecting with people, making every interaction meaningful and memorable.

Family was at the heart of Joyce's existence. An annual gathering in Branson every September brought her loved ones together, where joy and laughter filled the air, creating lasting memories for all. Her deep love for her husband Richard Rukes, whom she married on November of 1969, formed a bond that stood the test of time. They shared a passion for travel that allowed them to create cherished memories together.

She leaves behind her daughter Candice Leigh, and she was delighted in her role as a grandmother to Joe (Jessi) Brooks, Lora Leigh, Christina (Jacob) Havens, and to her nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her treasured dog, Bongo. The love she poured into her family extended to her hobbies as well, where Joyce found joy in crocheting and collecting glass art. Each intricately crafted piece told a story, much like her own life, adorned with beautiful experiences and cherished moments.

Joyce also had a special fondness for the Holiday Barbie ornaments, which served as a delightful reminder of her playful spirit and love for traditions. She had a great love for animals. When she was younger, she loved to take care of her horse Lady. She radiated warmth and compassion, inspiring everyone she met to appreciate the beauty in life.

Joyce is survived by her loving husband Richard; her daughter Candice; her grandchildren Joe, Lora, and Christina; her nine great-grandchildren; and her brother Larry (Vance) Sample. She joins her parents, Ivan Franklin Sample and Lucille Iva (Anderson) Sample, in eternal rest.

A visitation will be held at Parker-Price & Davidson in Topeka, Kansas, on May 22, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Joyce A. Rukes leaves behind a legacy woven with love, laughter, and an indomitable spirit that will forever echo in the hearts of those she touched.
