James "JD" Ressler, a kind-hearted and jovial man, passed away on February 6, 2026, in Topeka, Kansas. Born on August 23, 1950, in Portland, Oregon, JD traversed a life filled with laughter, love, and a passion for connecting with people. He embraced the world with open arms and a spirited smile, understanding that every stranger was merely a friend he hadn't yet met.
JD’s warm personality was matched only by his remarkable career. A devoted truck driver, he spent years navigating the winding roads of America, representing various companies with pride. Alongside his ventures on the highways, he brought his expertise to HyVee in Topeka, where he served diligently in the deli and meat department. His relationships formed in these roles highlighted his outgoing nature, effortlessly engaging with customers and fellow employees alike, drawing them into delightful conversations infused with his signature dad jokes.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, JD served as a cook during the tumultuous Vietnam War, earning an honorable discharge in 1972. This chapter of his life was marked not only by service but also by the skills and camaraderie that would shape him into the man many would remember for his nurturing spirit.
Beyond his professional endeavors, JD was a man of many interests and pastimes. Ever the music lover, he drummed on anything that came to hand, filling rooms and hearts with rhythm and cheer. His love of tinkering found expression in a vast and eclectic movie collection, while his creative side flourished in the homemade cards he crafted with meticulous attention to detail. The joy he found in these hobbies was mirrored by his affinity for family experiences — gathering around the campfire in the warm embrace of summer, making s’mores with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and cherishing the bright explosions of fireworks that adorned the July sky.
JD also had a special bond with his pets and an insatiable curiosity that took him to the zoo and hockey games with his loved ones, where he could always be spotted in the crowd, exuding warmth and encouraging camaraderie. His family was the cornerstone of his existence, and his love for them knew no bounds.
He leaves behind a loving spouse, Jeanette Bigger, and step daughter Becky (Earl Jr.) Pinkston. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Earl (Betsy) Pinkston III, Courtney (Brandon) Gruetzmacher, Ashton (Megan) Bigger, and Kymberly Siemens, as well as his great-grandchildren Kinslee Emerson, Rylie, Kanen, Myles, Becca Bigger, and Aiden Gruetzmacher. He also leaves behind his sisters, Sandra Hendry and Nancy (Mike) Chancellor.
In remembrance of this warm spirit, family and friends are invited to celebrate JD’s life. Visitation will take place on February 13, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 1:00 PM, both held at Parker-Price & Davidson, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, Kansas 66608. Burial with military honors will follow at Topeka Cemetery.
Though a cherished chapter in many lives has closed, the echoes of JD’s laughter and the warmth of his love will remain forever embedded in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a tapestry of memories strewn with joy, humor, and an exuberant spirit that will be dearly missed.
