James F. Barkley was born on January 30, 1943, in Baldwin City, Kansas. He grew up in this community and completed his education at Baldwin High School, graduating in 1961. James dedicated part of his early life to serving his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His commitment was marked by honorable recognition when he was discharged in 1967. Throughout his military service, he earned several medals, including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Sharpshooter Medal, and the Army of Operations Medal.

After his time in the service, James worked as a truck driver. This career was a significant part of his life, providing for his family and connecting him with many people along the way.

James passed away on May 2, 2026, in Topeka, Kansas. His life touched many, and he leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Gary) Rath, as well as eight grandchildren who brought joy to his later years. James also leaves behind his sister, Joy Thompson, who shared in his lifetime of memories.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Barkley and Marie Clary Barkley; his wife, Honey Bea; daughter, Tina DeAnn Barkley and brother, Homer Barkley.

James F. Barkley’s story is one of service, family, and dedication. His contributions to his community and country will be remembered by those who knew him.
