Elwin Kenna Cooper, 91, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026 in Topeka, Kansas after dementia robbed him of his memories, speech, and eventually his body.
He was born on February 20, 1934 in Norwich, Kansas, the son of George and Monta Mae (Williams) Cooper.
He moved to Yates Center, Kansas as a child and graduated from Yates Center High School in 1952 before joining the National Guard in 1954, and eventually the Army in 1956, serving two years of active duty. He served in the Army Reserves for over 30 years, and retired with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was also employed with the Army Reserves in a civil service capacity, retiring in 2000.
Elwin married Clarnetta M. Schwien on August 15, 1965 in Bazine, Kansas. They have one son, Scott D. Cooper.
He enjoyed music shows and singing in the church choir. He enjoyed going to vintage car shows and loved traveling.
He is fondly remembered for his laid back demeanor and gentle wit, and was beloved by all who knew him.
Elwin is survived by his wife of sixty years, Clarnetta, his son Scott and one sister, Merlen Zoan Popejoy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service to honor his life will take place at 2:00pm Monday January 12, 2026 at Parker Price and Davidson Funeral Home, 245 NW Independence Ave Topeka, Kansas 66608. A reception at the Parker Price reception center will follow.
