Donald "Don" Campbell, 85, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2026 at Midland Hospice House.
He was born November 15, 1940, in Beloit, Kansas, the son of Lloyd Lewis and Alice Virginia "Pat" (Winsell) Campbell. Throughout his childhood, his family lived in Kansas, South Dakota and Texas because of his father's profession. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1959.
He married Rachel Dobbs and they had four children, Kimberly, Michelle, Lloyd and Leah. They later separated.
Years later, Don reconnected with Karen (Lyne) Hartman, his high school sweetheart. They became lifelong companions and he gained a bonus son, Chris.
Don didn't have just one profession throughout the years. He was a Heavy Equipment Operator, a Union Carpenter, a Union Bricklayer and a General Contractor. He built churches, schools, gymnasiums, commercial chicken houses and dairy barns, explosive bunkers and renovated homes. He was an all around handyman.
He became a member of the CrossRoads Wesleyan Church in Topeka in 2015 after receiving a friendly invite from his neighbor, Charlie. Don was baptized by Pastor David on June 26, 2016.
Don had a plethora of hobbies. He loved to fly private planes and taught many people how even. He was an outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, playing paint ball and playing softball. Each spring, Don could hardly wait until it was time to plant his garden that consisted of tomatoes, okra and various pepper plants. Don stayed busy, in his spare time, doing crossword puzzles, reading Western books, watch Western movies, travel and play pool. He also loved to listen to Country Western music, especially George Jones, Conway Twitty and Roy Orbinson. He would occasionally sing karaoke to some of his favorite songs. Don had a need for speed and proudly supported automobile racing. He was part owner, a mechanic and driver on special occasions for the race car he sponsored. He was a fan of NASCAR, the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals.
He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Abilene Eagles Club in the 1980's. He was also a proud member of the NRA and believed in his 2nd amendment rights.
Don was a people person and often found the good in them and never talked poorly of them. He was a jokester with a great sense of humor, often finding a joke to answer your questions with. Don enjoyed teasing those around him.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Karen Hartman; his children, Kimberly (David) Sias, Michelle (Ray) Mulvaney, Lloyd (Mellissa) Campbell II, Leah (Brian) Hendrick and bonus son, Chris Hartman; his beloved grandchildren, Cody, Jessyca, Cassandra, Miranda, Katarina, Colbi, Levi, Trey, Savannah, Ryan, Olivia, Erika, Damian, Chrystal and Wayne; his great grandchildren, Rachel, Kimmy, Kaya, Kade, Priya, Ellie Jo, Joslyn, Emma, Tilly, Isabella, Zakkary, Caroline, Scarlett, Addilyn and Waylon and his brother, Andy Campbell. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Darline Hill.
A private burial will take place at Abilene Cemetery. In his honor, memorial contributions can be made to the Abilene Schools Endowment, 213 N. Broadway, Abilene, KS 67410.
