Dolores Jean Pottorf

September 10, 1929 — June 13, 2025

Topeka

Dolores Jean Pottorf, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished community member, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas. Born on September 10, 1929, in Valley Falls, Kansas, Dolores lived a life rich in love, laughter, and dedication.

Dolores had a remarkable career, serving faithfully at the Santa Fe Railroad from 1947 until her retirement in 1992. Her commitment to her work mirrored her dedication to her family and friends—a testament to her strong spirit. A woman of both shyness and outgoing warmth, Dolores touched the lives of those around her with her kindness and gentle nature.

Her educational journey began in Valley Falls and later led her to Clarks Business School, where she cultivated her skills that contributed to her successful career. Beyond her professional life, Dolores was passionate about many interests that brought joy to herself and others. She found pleasure in reading, gardening, and continuously trying new recipes. Her artistic side blossomed through tole painting, while her generous heart led her to volunteer work within her community. Dolores also delighted in the simple joys of garage sales, staying active at the gym, and dancing, which made every gathering more vibrant.

Dolores is survived by two loving sons, Scott Pottorf of Orange Park, FL and Brett Pottorf of Topeka. Her legacy continues through her two adored grandchildren, Cameron Pottorf of Okinawa, JA and Sterling Pottorf of Colorado Springs, CO. She also leaves behind her nieces, Pam (Jerry) Solis and Kristine Fuqua along with other extended family whose lives she enriched.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of over 60 years, Harold “Hal” Pottorf, whose memory she held dear. Dolores was also preceded by her parents, Florence (Sieble) Byers and Delbert Byers, and her brother, Don Byers, all of whom shaped her into the loving matriarch she became.

Dolores Jean Pottorf’s presence will be profoundly missed, yet her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her. A visitation to honor her memory will take place on June 30, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Parker-Price & Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka, Kansas.
