SGM (Ret.) Derron John Lindsey, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly in his home on May 27, 2025, at the age of 60. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership, service, and unwavering love for his family, especially his daughters.
Born on January 4, 1965, in Topeka, Derron joined the Kansas Army National Guard in 1984, serving in A Company, 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation Regiment, Kansas Army National Guard. He proudly served his country for over three decades, retiring in 2016. During his distinguished career, SGM Lindsey trained or mentored nearly every enlisted crew member in his battalion, leaving a profound and lasting impact on all who served with him. He was known for his exceptional leadership, professionalism, and his ability to bring humor and light into even the most difficult situations.
Derron’s passion for music began in childhood and remained a defining aspect of his life. He spent many years performing with the local country band Dixie Road, where he was not just a musician but a source of joy and energy for everyone around him. In his retirement, Derron continued his musical journey by performing with the Sierra Band, sharing his love for country music and enriching the lives of those who had the pleasure of hearing him play.
Derron was a proud father, and his love for his daughters was boundless. He is survived by his daughter, Hayley Lindsey of Topeka; his daughter, Jordan Horn (Jimmy Horn) of Sharon, Kansas; his former spouse and the mother of his children, Tammy Lindsey; his beloved service dog, Rosie; his step-father, Butch Walstrom of Topeka, Kansas; his sister, Angela Lindsey-Simons; and his niece and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Colleen Walstrom (Henderson), and his father, Glenn “John” Martin Lindsey.
Derron was known for his sharp wit and infectious sense of humor. No matter the situation, his ability to lighten the mood and make others laugh was one of his most cherished qualities. He had a knack for turning difficult moments into ones of levity and laughter, leaving behind a trail of smiles wherever he went. His humor, combined with his strength and loyalty, made him a beloved father, friend, and leader.
Throughout his life, Derron’s influence was felt not only in his military career and music but in the countless lives he touched with his kindness, generosity, and unmistakable wit. His dedication to his family, particularly to his daughters, was unwavering, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A ceremony to honor Derron’s life will be held on June 8, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Combat Air Museum 7016 SE Forbes Ave, Topeka, KS 66619. Derron will be cremated, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Heartland K9s, 12651 Gateway Dr, Neosho MO 64850.
