Dennis "Scott" Barnes, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on May 19, 2026, in his hometown of Topeka, Kansas. Born on January 29, 1967, Scott lived a life marked by warmth, humor, and a deep love for his family and community.
A proud graduate of Seaman High School’s class of 1985, Scott devoted much of his career to the Seaman School District. His roles were many and varied—he was known for his dedication while working on the Food Service Delivery Truck, as well as taking on responsibilities in maintenance, custodial duties, and serving as ground crew. His coworkers remember him as a quick-witted jokester who always had a smile on his face and was genuinely happy to greet everyone he met.
Scott’s personality shone brightly in his daily life. He was a man who carried a great sense of humor, bringing laughter to those around him. Whether on the job or enjoying time at home, he was always in a good mood, his upbeat spirit touching the hearts of family, friends, and colleagues alike.
Outside of his work, Scott found joy in many passions that connected him to nature and his loved ones. He loved music and played in the family band with his sister Connie. Their band was called "The Music Makers". He was a loyal fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, often sharing the excitement of the game with those around him. His handiwork and creativity were evident in his woodworking projects, and he took pride in landscaping and working outside in his yard. Scott had a special knack for making plum jelly and nurturing strawberry plants, activities that brought his family together and filled their home with comfort.
He was an avid outdoorsman who cherished hunting, fishing, and the seasonal tradition of hunting morel mushrooms. His love extended to his dogs, whom he cared for deeply and enjoyed spending time with. Scott’s life was truly entwined with the rhythms of the natural world, and he delighted in sharing these moments with the family he held so dear.
Scott’s family was the center of his universe. He was a family man who was a wonderful caregiver to his family and to both of his parents.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Tina Barnes, whom he married on August 12, 1989, in Topeka, Kansas. Together, they saw their family grow and flourish. His son, Steve DeVries, stands as a testament to Scott’s values and spirit. He also leaves behind his sisters Connie Shaw, Cindy McFarland, and Brenda Barnes, and his brothers Chris Hutton and Rick Barnes. The legacy of his joy and kindness carries on through his cherished grandchildren: Misty DeVries, Tatum DeVries, Halo DeVries, and Bryson Manrose.
Dennis "Scott" Barnes was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Dean Barnes, whose memory he carried with him throughout his life.
Scott’s passing leaves a void filled with treasured memories of a man who embraced life with humor, compassion, and an open heart. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him. His story is one of love, laughter, and a life well-lived in the company of those he cherished most.
