Carole S. Smith

Carole S. Smith, a cherished member of the Topeka community, passed away on May 28, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on March 16, 1943, in Topeka, Kansas, Carole was a vibrant soul who brought joy and humor into the lives of everyone she met. A dedicated social worker for the State of Kansas, Carole devoted her career to helping others, serving with compassion and fierce determination until her retirement.

Carole was a proud graduate of Highland Park High School, class of 1962, furthering her education at Washburn University, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Social Work in 1982. Her commitment to education and her profession was evident throughout her life, reflecting her passion for making a positive impact on those around her.

Known for her ornery spirit and infectious laughter, Carole was loved by all. She had a unique ability to light up any room she entered, often delighting friends and family with her quick wit and infectious sense of humor. Her greatest love, however, was reserved for her family. Carole adored her children, Debora (John) Hensely, Michael Standley, and David Standley, as well as her eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

In her leisure time, Carole found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed lying in bed and watching her favorite TV shows, sharing laughter and stories with loved ones, and indulging in her passion for coloring. One of her comfort foods was mashed potatoes and gravy, often enjoyed during family gatherings, where she thrived on connections with those she loved.

Carole is survived by her beloved daughter, Debora (John) Hensely, sons Michael Standley and David Standley, her eleven cherished grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, as well as her dear sister Pat Samson. She was preceded in death by her father, Hugh Greer Leeman, mother, Evelyn M. (Whitebread) Leeman, her first husband, Donald Standley, and her ex-husband, Dewey Smith.

Though Carole S. Smith is no longer with us, her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her humor, kindness, and unwavering love will continue to inspire all who were blessed to be a part of her life.

Private Celebration of her Life will be held at a later date. Carole will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas.
