Alyce U. Caldwell, 99, of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday morning, May 6, 2020. She was born April 29, 1921 in Bokoshe, Oklahoma. Her mom died when she was two and Alyce went to school at the Sequoia Orphan Indian School in Talequah, Oklahoma. She graduated from high school there. Alyce was a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
She was married to Ray Caldwell in Stilwell, Oklahoma in 1964. Ray worked in the coal industry and they lived in many places during his career. Ray’s work brought them to Topeka and they have lived here since 1976. Alyce loved to work with kids. She had a job at the Snack Bar at the Washburn University Student Union before going to work at the lunchroom at Washburn Rural High School and worked until she retired in 2008. She was the oldest employee Washburn Rural School District ever had.
Survivors include her husband Ray Caldwell of Topeka; children, Deen Manis and wife Lisa of Howe, Oklahoma, twins Arch “Buzz” Glover and wife Janelle of Poteau, Oklahoma and Pamela Day and husband Keith of Independence, Missouri, and Michael Glover of Tulsa, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Melissa Reynolds and husband Brian of Independence, Missouri, Dena Manis of Clearwater, Florida, Jimmy, Josh and Joe Glover in the Denver area; and one great granddaughter.
Alyce was preceded in death by seven siblings and her son Christopher in February of 2019.
Cremation is planned. A memorial graveside service is planned in her hometown of Poteau, Oklahoma. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice.
